Tom is a Civil Engineer and has owned and managed Water Design, Inc since 1997. He is very involved in all aspects of the design and engineering of water features; from small residential waterfalls and backyard pools to large competition, recreational, municipal and resort aquatic facilities throughout the country. Tom has been involved in engineering close to 2,000 pools over the past six years alone. He is not only a designer, but is a certified Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) as well. Tom is renowned for working especially well with facility owners, recreation departments, maintenance personnel, architects, developers, contractors, public officials, building and health departments to provide the owner with the best possible facility design available.
Tom is heavily involved in developing and writing swimming pool codes at both the county and state levels. This has allowed him to help facilitate positive health code changes for the aquatic industry. He is currently the chairman of the Utah State Swimming Pool Advisory Committee as well as a member of the Salt Lake County Board of Health. Tom is also involved in many national trade associations including the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He currently serves on the APSP Southwest Region Board which covers many of the western states. Tom serves as guest lecturer for industry organizations around the country. He has also acted as an expert witness for industry related court cases.
Prior Professional Experience:
Prior to gaining his engineering experience Tom has worked for one of the largest construction companies in the Intermountain West area which has allowed him to understand how large scope projects are organized and built. This knowledge allows Tom to develop creative design solutions while at the same time understanding the importance of project budgets, schedules, construction feasibility and logistics. Tom also worked for Azimuth, Inc and AAA engineering prior to his ownership of Water Design.
