Brigham Young University Natatorium (Richard's Building), Provo, Utah
The BYU Richards Building Natatorium provides the University with a facility that allows for competitive level swimming, diving and water polo both at the colligate level and community levels, various classes, programs and intramural leagues offered through the academic and campus recreation departments. The new natatorium utilizes the existing building footprint, and is updated to include some of the most technologically advanced operating systems available. The 9,530 square foot, fully ADA accessible competition pool has a moveable bulkhead with multiple parking locations, (2) 1 meter diving boards, (2) 3 meter diving boards and a 3 meter diving platform and 5 meter diving platform complete with air sparger system and water agitation sprays. It is constructed with with PVC laminated stainless steel pool technology. In an effort to keep the main underground service/pipe tunnel intact, the pool was constructed of cast in place concrete pool/tunnel walls and with PVC coated stainless steel renovaction wall panels allowing for the tunnel to remain intact. The competition pool has water depths from 7’0” at the shallowest part and slopes to 7’-2” that allows for an “all deep” area for 25 yard and 25 meter swimming and men’s and women’s water polo competition. At the 7’-2” water depth, the pool floor slopes steeply to 12’-2” and then slopes again to 13’-6” at the deepest point allowing for diving from the collection of spring boards and platforms. The stainless steel bulkhead has parking locations at the 25 yard and 25 meter swim courses; at the end wall opposite of the diving area; and in a location that allows for multiple intramural leagues/activities to occur simultaneously. The pool area has stadium spectator seating and a state of the art timing system with color LED video display board. Specifically designed for multiple uses, the 3,294 square foot, fully ADA accessible Family Pool It is constructed with PVC laminated stainless steel pool technology. In an effort to keep the main underground service/pipe tunnel intact, the pool is constructed of cast in place concrete pool/tunnel walls and with PVC coated stainless steel renovaction wall panels allowing for the tunnel to remain intact. The Family Pool water depths are 3’-6” at each end of the pool and sloping to 4’-0” in the center of the pool, with 6 - 25 yard swim lanes and multiple anchors for various swim lane configurations, programming and to allow for water polo training if desired.
